Lonsdale Chambers conducts a business of providing chambers, conference rooms and goods and support services to barristers who are members of Lonsdale Chambers or who are otherwise permitted to conduct their practices on the premises leased and managed by Lonsdale Chambers (Services).

Lonsdale Chambers does not collect, hold, use or disclose personal information in respect of persons, other than for the purpose of supplying the Services.

The kinds of personal information we collect and hold

Lonsdale Chambers collects and holds a range of personal information in connection with the Services. The kinds of personal information that it collects and holds about person is dependent on their relationship with Lonsdale Chambers.

Barristers’ clients

While barristers operating on the premises leased and managed by Lonsdale Chambers collect, hold, use and disclose personal information in respect of clients and other persons relevant to the legal services provided by those barristers, Lonsdale Chambers has, and bears, no responsibility of any kind whatsoever in respect of those activities and the relevant information.

Our contractors, service providers, suppliers and job applicants

Lonsdale Chambers does collect and hold the following kinds of personal information about contractors, service providers, suppliers and job applicants:

  • name and contact details;

  • information in resumes;

  • educational and academic details and history, employment history, skills and background checks;

  • references from past employers and others;

  • information collected during the interview or assessment process;

  • details of past work performance; and

  • information required to make payments, such as bank account details.

We may also collect sensitive information included in the matters referred to above, including criminal records and health information, including vaccination information.

Solicitors, clients, website users and online contacts

The only personal information which we collect about you when you contact us by email, or phone, and in respect of the provision of services to you, or your client, by a barrister or in respect of obtaining information about our barristers or a function hosted by Lonsdale Chambers, is what you tell us about yourself.

The kinds of personal information that we may collect through emails or phone calls is:

  • your name, contact details, employer and job title; and

  • the purpose of your contact with Lonsdale Chambers, or a barrister operating at Lonsdale Chambers.

How we collect personal information

In most instances we will collect personal information directly from the person to whom it relates, or the organisation of which that personal is an employee, director or principal. However, we may also collect personal information about from following third parties including:

  • government agencies;

  • public registries;

  • court or tribunal records;

  • ratings agencies;

  • search agencies;

  • regulatory and licensing bodies;

  • service providers;

  • parties to whom you refer us, including previous employers and referees;

  • recruitment agencies;

  • online searches; and

  • social media (such as LinkedIn and Facebook).

When we obtain personal information from third parties to whom you refer us you must ensure that you have made that third party aware that you have referred us to them and of the purposes involved in the collection, use and disclosure of the relevant personal information.

How we hold personal information

We hold limited personal information in hardcopy files and, more commonly, in electronic form, and take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.

We store hardcopy files in offices, cupboards within an access controlled premises. Access to files is appropriately limited.

We store electronic records on secured computers and through third party storage providers. Access to personal information is otherwise appropriately limited.

We collect, hold, use and disclose personal information for the purposes for which it was collected, related purposes, and other purposes including:

  • providing the services that our members, and barristers operating on the premises, have requested;

  • contracting out some of our functions to external service providers and suppliers;

  • carrying out research, planning, service development, security and risk management;

  • marketing our barristers’ services;

  • the organisation of events;

  • assessing and considering applications from prospective employees, contractors and service providers;

  • developing and managing relationships with our employees, contractors and service providers;

  • managing insurance;

  • complying with our legal and regulatory obligations;

  • ensuring a safe workplace; and

  • outsourcing our administrative and support functions.

Direct marketing

If you are a client of a member, or a barrister operating on the premises leased and managed by Lonsdale Chambers, or have otherwise expressed interest and provided us with your contact details, we may send emails to you with information about legal developments (such as publications, alerts and newsletters) and marketing our services (such as function invitations).

Access to your personal information

You have a right to request access to personal information that we hold about you and request its correction if it is inaccurate, out of date or incomplete. You may do so by contacting our Privacy Officer at the details below.
